Oval750

125MW / 750MWh - Western Australia

The Oval Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a 125 MW/ 750 MWh facility designed to enhance grid stability and support renewable energy integration in the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM). Once operational, it will provide critical capacity during peak demand periods, enable greater uptake of wind and solar generation, and deliver fast frequency response services. The project is currently in the development phase, with commissioning expected in 2029.

Location

The OVAL project site has been specifically selected with an emphasis on optimal geography and the accessibility of existing electrical infrastructure. Positioned 26 kilometres south of Western Power’s Southern Terminal, the site benefits from its strategic proximity to key transmission assets, ensuring efficient grid connectivity and minimal development complexity.

Situated 26 km south of Western Power’s Southern Terminal, the site lies outside the designated Clean Energy Link (CEL) build area. This provides a significant advantage by avoiding the lengthy timeframes associated with any government works.

The site also offers direct access to Western Power’s robust 330kV network, enabling a seamless connection without the need for additional easements.

This convenient and straightforward network access significantly enhances the project’s potential to deliver reliable energy to the grid and supports future scalability as the region transitions to more renewable energy sources.

Project Size

OVAL750 is a state-of-the-art Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) designed to provide 750MWh of energy storage, discharged over a six-hour period. This facility will be connected directly to Western Power’s 330kV transmission network, positioned to support the southern section of the network and increase its capacity to accommodate renewable energy generation.

With a planned nameplate capacity of 125MW, OVAL750 is projected to supply power to an estimated 6,250 homes during peak demand periods. The facility’s ability to store and dispatch energy when the grid faces high demand or energy shortages will play a key role in maintaining a stable and reliable power supply.

OVAL750 will enhance the Southwest Interconnected System (SWIS) by providing a critical buffer that helps integrate additional renewable energy sources.
